SEO is the search engine optimization technique developed by Google to improve search engine rankings and quality of websites.
The early 2000's was where Google slowly began its takeover and begun to set the guidelines of basic SEO. 
In 2001 Google begun to think more about SEO when people doesn’t find any results on their search queries.
The early search engines requires webmasters to submit their link and the search engines usually display complete lists of Web sites based on the keyword.
As the number of Web sites on the Internet continued to increase, these early search engines became increasingly unwieldy and hard to use.   
Later people started to create non quality websites and Google started ranking system to rank these websites according to certain conditions and criteria.
The different criteria’s are,

1)Content specification were the pages having more content list first, due to this reason people began to stuff the keyword with no reason and is updated by the Google using,

2)Link specification were the pages having more links list first, which later lead to link selling and buying between people and is replaced by

3) Quality link specification were the page or website is listed according to the quality of links and google began to degrade the rank those who involved in buying and selling.
To stop the following links Google introduced "no follow links" to restrict others from following the web page or website.
In 2008 and 2009 Google introduced new programs and updations to develop the search quality and search  results and introduced pogo sticking were Google degrade the  website or page whenever the people exit from the website immediately.

Off page optimization is used to improve search rankings in search results. This kind of optimization technique is not performed inside the website rather it is performed outside the website.
eg: social media marketing, link building.

 On Page Optimization

On page optimization improve the the website or list the website on search results. This is usually controlled by webmasters or SEO masters. The things that affect on page optimization are proper title, proper URL,suitable keyword,mobile friendly page, fast loading page, External links, social media connections etc.

White hat and Black hat SEO

White hat SEO means the optimization is done in the ethical or in the correct way. They usually produces original and quality contents.
Black hat SEO is the just opposite of white hat, were is done not in an ethical way and is done based on quick returns and profit and is punishable.

Google often optimize the web page or website using three methods

Catching is the process of collecting information from certain Web Pages or websites.
Indexing means, as the name indicates it list the page according certain rankings and conditions.

After getting popular among people Google introduced ad words by adding keywords in displaying advertisements based on CPC(cost per click) were the owner have to pay money based on the number of clicks.
Ad sense was introduced  among publishers by the Google were advertisement is displayed on there Web Pages and portion of commission/profit is distributed among them during each visit.
